Mount Manaslu is the highest peak of the Gurkha massif, and is the eighth highest mountain in the world. It is located about forty miles east of Mount Annapurna. The mountain’s long ridges and valley glaciers offer feasible approaches from all directions, and it culminates in a peak that towers steeply above its surrounding landscape is a dominant feature. The first successful Manaslu expedition was in 1956 and the ascent was made by T. Imanishi (Japan) and Gyalzen Norbu (Sherpa). Climbing Manaslu takes about 7 weeks, including the scenic trek to Manaslu Basecamp at 4400 metres. The trekking route relatively untouched and is a highlight on its own.
At 8163 metres, Climbing Manaslu is about as technical and challenging as Cho Oyu (8,188 metres ) and Shisapangma (8027 metres) and is a good climb before attempting a serious technical 8000 metre mountain.
The Manaslu expedition is very popular autumn these days as it sees higher success rates because the best Sherpas and climbers focus on the lower 8000m peaks during this season and the higher 8000m peaks are left for the spring season.
